12 month, 8 hour per day position (40 hours per week)

 

CUSTODIAN DESCRIPTION

Position Summary:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc. Work involves the transferring of equipment, custodial, instrument repair and audiovisual. Reports to the Assistant Principal or Principal.

 

Qualification Requirements:

  • General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Has proven attendance record.
  • High school diploma or equivalency preferred.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes and buffs floor surfaces.
  • Scrubs and cleans bathrooms, including toilets, mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, slop sinks, etc. Fills tissue, towels, soap and other dispensers, disinfects as needed.
  • Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
  • To dust furniture, walls, window sills, blinds and other woodwork.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures.
  • Clean drinking fountains.
  • To assemble, set up and move furniture as required.
  • May open and secure buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively, and adjust heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.
  • To clean and organize storage room.
  • Unload and store supplies and deliveries.
  • Raises and lowers flags at start and end of workday.
  • Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion. May require working on ladders.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as janitorial equipment.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
  • Physical demand requirements are for medium work.

 

BUS DRIVER DESCRIPTION

Position Summary:
Performs semi-skilled work operating a school bus, transporting students to and from school, activities or events, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Transportation Planner.

 

Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience with at least 6 months of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.
  • Ability to assist children using patience and understanding.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.
  • Essential Duties
  • Performs pre- and post-trip school bus inspection; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
  • Transports students to and from school, along with other activities and events.
  • Cleans bus inside and out including washing, sweeping, emptying trash, etc.
  • Fuels bus as needed.
  • Obeys traffic laws and observes safety regulations for school bus operations.
  • Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as needed.
  • Conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills.
  • Records mileage; maintains records and reports.
  • Performs related work as required.


Physical Requirements

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.
  • Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Work could be in a moderately noisy location.


Special Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Applicable training will be provided.
  • Must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsement in the State of North Carolina.
  • Pre-employment DOT Drug Test is required
  • Pre-employment Criminal/DMV check is required
  • Physical Standards Test and all legal requirements of the NC DMV and Henderson County Public Schools
